About the Concert
The text of Carmina Burana, which is taken from
12th century writings of the Goliards, is often
dismissed as having no relevance or message other
than bawdy songs of drinking and revelry. Upon
closer examination, we find that the Goliards were
the activists of that day, speaking out against
the awesome and omniscient power of the medieval
papacy. These scholars were often clerics who did
not have the funds to buy their way into the offices
of the church and wrote thinly disguised satire
against the selling of indulgences, a blatant corruption
that was fully vented in Martin Luther’s
Reformation three centuries later. In addition
to performing this enduring choral masterpiece,
we sing songs from early medieval times that trace
the futility and cultural ignorance of the Crusades
and illuminate the eerie 2,000 year-old folly of
war.
